Sudoku For Masters, published in 2006, offers readers challenging puzzles that test their mental skills. Sudoku consists of 81 cells that make a 9x9 grid. This is then further divided into nine 3x3 regions. Some cells have numbers in them, and the objective is to fill the empty cells with digits from 1 to 9. However, this logic-based number placement puzzle can only be solved by placing numbers in such a way that each digit appears only once in every row, column, and region. Designed by Howard Garns, a retired architect, this puzzle helps stimulate the intellect and does not require any knowledge of mathematics. With a pencil in hand, Sudoku For Masters can be both fun and addictive.

Sudoku For Masters has twenty sections, with six sudokus in each. It features Classic Sudoku as well as several variations. Irregular sudoku is made up of grids that are 6x6, 9x9 or 12x12. Each region is irregular in shape, and thus no digit must be repeated in a row, column, or irregular region. Diagonal Sudoku is the same as the Classic version, except that it has an additional rule. In this puzzle, the numbers 1 to 9 can appear only once in the diagonals as well. Extra Region sudoku puzzles are the ones in which the grid is larger than the traditional 9x9 one. Sudoku For Masters also has Sum Puzzles in which the cells are enveloped in gray or dotted lines. It follows the rules of the Classic Sudoku, with an extra condition. The sum of the numbers in each area has to be equal to the clue in the area’s top-left corner.

These puzzles make this book very exciting and challenging. Hardeman has compiled a great set of puzzles that are designed to test one’s logical skills as well as patience. The first few sets are easy. The difficulty level rises as one reaches the last sections of the book.
