Sophie’s World is a novel authored by Jostein Gaarder, and it was originally written in Norwegian, titled Sofies Verden. It has been translated to more than 53 languages. Sophie Amundsen is a young 14-year-old girl who gets attracted to philosophy, and her journey begins with a letter that she receives from a philosopher, Alberto Knox. He initially remains anonymous to her but gradually reveals himself. He teaches her the history of philosophy, covering the popular philosophical movements of the Baroque, Enlightenment, Renaissance, and Romantic periods. She is gradually drawn into the world of great philosophers like Socrates, Descartes, Heget, and Spinoza. While she receives the messages from Alberto Knox, she also receives post cards addressed to another girl, Hilde Moller Knag.These post cards are from Albert Knag, an important character in the novel. Sophie, with the help of Alberto Knox, sets out to unravel the mystery behind Hilde, whose life is embroiled with hers.

Jostein Gaarder is a Norwegian writer. He was born on August 8, 1952, in Oslo. He is known for using meta-fiction in his writings, and has written books for children, along with short stories and novels. Sophie’s World is his most famous work. His other books include Diagnosen Og Andre Noveller, Kabalmysteriet, and Froskeslottet. He is also an active human rights activist. His wife is Siri Dannevig, and together with her, he established the Sophie Prize in the year 1997. Gaarder is the recipient of many awards, including the Norwegian Critics Prize for Literature, the Premio Bancarella, and the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis.
