The Turning Point
A 1977 Hollywood film (made by Twentieth-Century Fox) about an ageing ballerina (Anne Bancroft) and her erst while colleague (Shirley MacLaine), who gave up her career in order to raise a family. The plot revolves around the latter's daughter (real-life ballerina Leslie Browne) who wants to pursue the career her mother never had. The film goes behind the scenes into the daily life of a major ballet company (American Ballet Theatre) and features many real-life dancing stars, including Mikhail Baryshnikov as the daughter's love interest, Antoinette Sibley, and Alexandra Danilova. There is also performance footage of Fernando Bujones, Richard Cragun, Suzanne Farrell, Marcia Hayd�e, and Peter Martins. The script was written by Arthur Laurents; direction was by the former dancer and choreographer Herbert Ross, whose wife, the former ballerina Nora Kaye, assisted him.
